I think Melanie's music is so empowering, and listening to her songs is just the female experience. Crybaby - Shutting down emotions, shaming women for having emotions. Mrs potato head - Changing yourself for a man because society and media make women believe they have to be perfect to be loved. Orange juice - Eating disorders, body image. Strawberry shortcake - Women being blamed for horrible male actions. Drama club - People using you for their own benefits and painting you to be what they want. Detention - Voice being shut down Show and Tell - Society making you feel like in order to be successful, you have to let people take advantage of you. Lunchbox friends - Fake friends. Recess - People taking advantage of you. Also Dollhouse I feel is not only "Mel thinks she has to be perfect" or "crybabay does" but I think shes more so saying that the family has dark secrets that they pretend aren't there. The mother covers herself up and encourages the kids to pretend everything is fine because she's living in her own fantasy or is scared of being judged by others. -Fire drill also discusses bullying and spreading rumors just for fun when uts destroying people.

BORN IN THE USA is not an ANTI-PATRIOTIC song at all. I remember when the song was released as a single. I grew up during the Vietnam War, one of 5 kids of a serviceman. My father did 6 tours in Vietnam after his first tour in Korat, Thailand. This song actually hits perfectly on the plight of many Vietnam vets upon returning home to a country in which the media and the politicians basically told the American public that our troops were killing babies, commenting War atrocities, and were going to lose the war. The political leaders would not allow the military to actually fight the enemy. The song tells how the character grew up in a bad situation, in a town in which he got into trouble that was bad enough he was given the choice to enlist for 2 years or serve a prison term. That was very common practice. Judges actually thought the military would change men and make them more disciplined. It is a practice that goes ack a long time in our country. The character had a brother who enlisted in the Marine Corps and was killed in Khe Sahn. A very terrible place to have been. It was shelled almost nonstop for over a year. The only memento to remember his brother is a picture of him with his Vietnamese "girlfriend". Upon returning home, the character is unable to get employment at what appears to be the only decent job in town, working in a oil refinery. Like way too many Vietnam vets, he was screwed over by the VA. Then spends the next 10 years basically doing nothing. Nothing UNAMERICAN, it tells FACTS. That is not UNPATRIOTIC. As a veteran, I can understand the song fir what it is, it is not un-American!!!!!

It is about family problems. Many of her fans relate to Dollhouse, and helps them cope with family problems having the song to relate too. And some of the songs on k-12 also have deep meanings like this as well. Like the song wheels on the bus. It is not about children doing mature things or “creepy bus drivers” it is simply about the struggles of bullying. Again many of her fans can relate to wheels on the bus and helps them cope with their struggles when they know that they are not alone, like in crybaby’s situation.
